Shocking Unemployment Numbers
“…the percentage of the unemployed who have been out more than 26 weeks in past recessions: July 2009, 34 percent; July 2003, 22 percent; July 1992, 22 percent; and even in the very deep and long 1980 to 1982 double-recession it was 25 percent in July 1983. ‘So what?’ you might ask, since the unemployment rate this time is not likely to reach the 10.8 percent of late...

The Great American Health Care Reform
It’s difficult for me to pin point exactly how I feel about this health care reform. In an ideal world, Obama’s plan makes crystal clear, logical sense. A single-payer system public-option will reduce health-care costs and provide easier access to all who need it.
But then I read articles like this from The New Yorker.
Or this from The Atlantic (excerpts below).
Health insurance...
Letters by 4th Graders to the Year 2000 (1976) →
The July 4, 1976 Grand Prairie Daily News (Grand Prairie, TX) published letters written by 4th graders, addressed to people of the year 2000. Just as the newspaper did, I’ve left the spelling and grammatical errors. Because if we’ve learned anything at the Paleo-Future blog, it’s that kids are stupid.
We’ll begin by looking at letters by young Laurie Smith, Yolanda...
Fat Tax.
“The solutions to these problems are beyond the control of any individual. They involve a different sort of responsibility: civic — even political — responsibility. They depend on the kind of collective action that helped cut smoking rates nearly in half. Anyone who smoked in an elementary-school hallway today would be thrown out of the building. But if you served an obesity-inducing,...

America’s Total Energy Use Dropped in 2008 →
“The United States used 99.2 quadrillion BTUs of energy in 2008, down from 101.5 quads in 2007.”
Awesome.
Sticks.
In the front yard of the house I grew up in we had an enormous tree that filled up the sky with its branches when you looked upwards. The thing was massive. My parents looked into removing it on numerous occasions because insurance appraisers warned of how fucked our house would be if it got struck by lightning, but it was always way too expensive to justify the cost.
I hated that tree. It shed...

Defining ‘Sustainable Agriculture’ →
boomshockalocka:
This could be a huge step, the organic label is in serious need of a revision as is the idea of “organic.”
One outcome of this effort could be a new “sustainable agriculture” label stamped on food — similar to the way some food is now marketed as organic. It could also create a system that rewards farmers for doing things like reducing the amount of nitrogen fertilizer they...

Obama speaks out about...not speaking out on Iran
boomshockalocka:
“The last thing that I want to do is to have the United States be a foil for those forces inside Iran who would love nothing better than to make this an argument about the United States. That’s what they do. That’s what we’re already seeing. We shouldn’t be playing into that. There should be no distractions from the fact that the Iranian people are seeking to let their voices be...
After Waterboarding: How to Make Terrorists Talk? →
boomshockalocka:
The most successful interrogation of an Al-Qaeda operative by U.S. officials required no sleep deprivation, no slapping or “walling” and no waterboarding. All it took to soften up Abu Jandal, who had been closer to Osama bin Laden than any other terrorist ever captured, was a handful of sugar-free cookies.
On "cheap food"
boomshockalocka:
From Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma:
I asked Joel how he answers the charge that because food like his is more expensive, it is inherently elitist. “I don’t accept the premise,” he replied. “First off, those weren’t any ‘elitists’ you met on the farm this morning. We sell to all kinds of people. Second, whenever I hear people say clean food is expensive, I tell them...
